Getting the most out of multi-lingual booklet labels

When it comes to the labelling of cosmetic products it is vitally important that the consumer is aware of the ingredients they contain and how they should be used/ applied.

Cosmetics are defined by the FDA as "articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body...for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance" [FD&C Act, sec. 201(i)].”

This includes perfumes, moisturisers, lotions, make-up, shampoos, toothpaste and deodorants to name a few. Cosmetic product labels must by law include a list of the ingredients included within the product in descending order by quantity. This way, consumers can check if there are any ingredients they may wish to avoid or perhaps even have had bad experiences/ reactions to in the past.

You may see some product labels with the wording “For professional Use Only” written on them. These products are intended for use exclusively by professionals such as hairdressers, beauty salons or beauticians who are trained in ensuring the products are used in the correct and safe manner.
When creating a label for the following factors should be taken into account:
  1. The legal requirements in regard to cosmetic labelling
  2. Product name and description
  3. List of ingredients
  4. User instruction/ application guidelines
  5. Company contact details
There are a range of material and finishing options available when considering cosmetic label design including multi-page labels, clear-on-clear labels, wet-peel labels as well as standard custom printed labels.
