Packaging and labelling innovations for 2012

According to the RNIB there are approximately 2 million people in the UK who are blind or partially sighted. This week (4-11 January, 2012) is national braille week.

The Braille system was invented by a Frenchman named Louie Braille in 1821. It is a coded system of raised dots aimed at allowing visually impaired people to read and write.

Braille has helped thousands of people to communicate on a daily basis and carry out their everyday business. It’s more than just a way of providing entertainment such as in books and literature. Braille labeling can help identify whether a product is harmful or not for example. Pharmaceutical braille labeling can also indicate what type of medicine has been given to a person and how much they should take.

With people living longer, so the likelihood of blindness is higher. The RNIB predict a significant increase to around 2.25 million by 2020 and close to 4 million by 2050.
